Meditation, Mindfulness, and Compassion Classes
I took the 8-week MBSR course (live via Zoom) with Eliane Retholtz at the New York Insight Meditation Center, but there are SO many places that offer it, including a self-guided version through Sounds True (which is where the thumbnail image is from). I will say, though, the group element of the class is a really important part of building community, so if you can swing a live version (in person or virtually), I highly recommend it.
I took the 8-week, online MSC course through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, which is where the practice originated with Dr. Kristin Neff and Chris Germer. I highly recommend doing a live class here, too, whether in person or virtual, as the support and shared experiences from the group are invaluable.
This is a 3-day intensive program (via Zoom) that “teaches practical mindfulness, emotional intelligence and leadership tools to unlock your full potential at work and in life.” If you’re just beginning this journey, this would be a great primer for a wide variety of practices and modalities. If you’re already pretty well versed in psychology, mindfulness, empathy, etc., it may feel a little too basic, but valuable nonetheless.
This is an 8-week course run by the Center for Compassionate Leadership, which has a treasure trove of wonderful content. The class itself delivers an “organizational, and transformational, experience in creating cultures of safety, resilience, connection, and belonging.” It’s also run by two amazing people Laura Berland and Evan Harrel.
Mental health orgs for resources and support (and to donate to!)
“To Write Love on Her Arms is a nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery.”
The Scooty Fund was co-founded by Kasey Taylor, an amazing and wonderful human, after she lost her brother to suicide. Through podcasts, social media, resources, and outreach, TSF works to promote, support, and advance mental health culture in ways that enhance the lives and well being of young people.
TDP offers frameworks for understanding your depression, support for speaking about it and asking for help, and resources for working through it—including The Depression School, books, and an amazing Instagram community.
This org was born from the book with the same name, by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant. It’s focus is on navigating grief, dealing with trauma, building resilience, and helping others struggling with the same.
“BEAM is a national training, movement building, and grant making institution that is dedicated to the healing, wellness, and liberation of Black and marginalized communities.”
Practices, groups, and good IG follows
This isn’t related to Gretchen Rubin’s “Happiness Project” as far as I know, but it’s a wonderful IG account to follow for real people’s experiences, struggles, and triumphs.
Jeff Warren is one of my favorite meditation teachers, because he’s funny, real, and completely relatable. He holds open meditation sessions on Zoom most Mondays through one of his two groups, the Conscious Explorer’s Club or The Do Nothing Project.
Empathy Lab is run by two amazing humans and friends, Shelton Davis and Theresa Ward. They created a construct called the Empathy Decathlon that they teach to groups and orgs of all sizes. And, they hold 45 minute Empathy Standup practices every Wednesday morning, which I have been attending for almost two years now.
Apps of all varieties
I’ve been using this app for 3+ years. They have great courses, amazing teachers, lots of single meditations on a variety of topics. Even when I fall out of practice, I always come back here for the sleep tracks.
So many people love this one…probably because it’s free, ha. But there are also a ton of great meditations here, both guided and unguided.
This is where I first discovered Danielle LaPorte, through her Free + Clear and Desire Map courses. It’s pretty reasonably priced for an annual subscription, and all of the classes I’ve taken so far have come with downloadable worksheets/workbooks, too.
